As the humanitarian crisis in Ukraine deepens the British government continues to fail to adequately respond. It has still not responded to the call to “Wave Visas Not Flags.” There are still strict visa requirements on those fleeing the conflict to enter Britain and no refugee scheme. There has also not been enough international action on racism towards African and Asian people in Ukraine by the Ukrainian army and other officials. Recent reports suggest that the Ukrainian army has surrounded student accommodation with no hot water or electricity in Sumy, preventing them from fleeing the country and prioritising White Ukrainians in leaving the country. The British government would rather maintain the racist hostile environment than reach out to help those fleeing destruction and war. That’s why despite the war the racist Nationality and Borders Bill is still being pushed through Parliament. We have to mobilise the antiracist majority - this is an emergency - to demand that all refugees must be welcome, safe passage for all and say no to racism. Today’s mobilising meeting (6pm) with Diane Abbott MP and others is all about building the biggest possible turnouts on the #MarchAgainstRacism in London and Glasgow (Saturday 19 March) and Cardiff (Sunday 20 March) - protests supported by the TUC and linked to a wave of international protests to mark UN antiracism day. Come to the meeting - bring your friends and your ideas!
