Micro-homes for the homeless
What a great idea ! And much needed for the town. I know there are people on the street not all have the usual issues some have had to escape some horrible situations. And sadly there is no where for them to live. And with the isolation period going on for a year there are many who because of 'no jobs' have faced difficulties at the worst time ever.
The modular pod homes for Reading’s rough sleepers
The plans for 40 temporary micro-homes for people struggling with homelessness will be built on land by a car park.
The bedsit units are described as 7.79 metres long and three metres wide, with a separate shower room and WC, and they will be stacked two high with external stairs to the upper units.
Pods are being manufactured off site and will be brought to the site at Cattle Market, Great Knollys Street, and the completion date is expected to be in this May.
People living at the site will have 24-hour support, which is hoped to avoid any antisocial behaviour.
£2 million has been invested into the accommodation units, which will house people currently housed in B&B accommodation during the pandemic.
Cllr John Ennis, lead member for housing, said in August following the approval: "I cannot think of a council in the south east that has housed as many rough sleepers.
"We don't want to return to having people on the streets of Reading but that is a massive challenge. We're going to say let's have a go."
