MESSAGE FROM THE MINISTRY OF EDUCATION IN JAMAICA

Good Day,

Please see information below  from the Ministry of Education in Jamaica.

The Ministry of Education and Youth (MEY) has drawn attention to the impact of Hurricane Beryl on the education sector. The preliminary assessment of damages done confirmed that over 200 primary and secondary public schools sustained infrastructural damages at an estimated cost of J$2.5 billion. It is for this reason that the MEY will be coordinating, through the National Education Trust (NET), a Disaster Response Project to focus on garnering resources from the Diaspora and international partners.

Financial donations for the ‘Hurricane Recovery Efforts’ for schools can be made to the NET via its website – www.net.org.jm and the Beryl Recovery Relief page – or directly via wire transfer to the NET Donation USD or JMD Accounts.  In-kind donations from overseas should be consigned to the NET, in accordance with its regular donation guidelines that assure the applicable customs waiver. The guidelines and account information are attached. It is suggested that you direct your outreach to Diaspora organizations with interest in the education sector.

It is recalled that the GOJ has taken a broader approach to emergency assistance in the aftermath of the hurricane, and that information on how to receive and channel donations was previously shared.

The Ministry looks forward to your support in this endeavour.
